The University of Louisville (UofL) Libraries is seeking an entry-level, intellectually curious, flexible, creative and engaged librarian to be our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) librarian, working in a collegial, service-oriented, and progressive department of 9 librarians, 3 professional staff, and 5 peer research assistants. This position represents an exciting opportunity to build on the Libraries’ existing relationships with these disciplines and help develop and promote innovative academic library services, shaped by emerging trends in these research fields. This position reports to the Ekstrom Library Head of the Research Assistance and Instruction Department (RAI) and joins a supportive department of colleagues who value collaboration.  For more information on the department, please see:

This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track position, appointed at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Initial rank and salary are made at the discretion of the Dean of University Libraries. The University offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual vacation of 22 working days. Promotion and tenure require demonstration of scholarship and other criteria.

This librarian….

  • Cultivates and communicates an understanding of the research practices, information needs and publishing patterns in assigned departments and provides specialized research assistance.
  • Actively engages with faculty in assigned departments to communicate and make decisions about services and information sources.
  • Works with faculty to plan, deliver, and assesses student-centered, general and subject-specific instruction and information literacy sessions using appropriate technologies and instruction methods in consultation with the Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and the Online Learning Team.
  • Actively and consistently promotes library services to faculty, staff, and students in the STEM departments.
  • Develops and deploys criteria to evaluate information resources, and analyzes their use and appropriateness in conjunction with other RAI librarians and the collection development librarians.
  • Maintains an awareness of ongoing innovations in research at UofL, including the Belknap Research Park development, and recommends new service models as needed.
  • Participates in the shared work of RAI including providing general research consultation service via a variety of mediums.
  • Participates in scholarly activities, committee work and completes other assigned tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program by June 1, 2018; or, international equivalent in library or information science
  • Experience providing library services to relevant disciplines, or a degree in a relevant STEM discipline
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Ability to initiate, balance, and follow through on multiple projects
  • Ability to be flexible and open to change
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, information literacy, and public service
  • Proven ability to work successfully with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and community members
  • Potential for satisfying the University Libraries faculty promotion and tenure requirements

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in providing reference/research assistance service
  • Academic library experience
  • Teaching experience in a classroom setting
  • Familiarity with current trends in STEM education
  • Experience with online learning technologies and/or instructional design
