“#MLTW 2017 Fashionista” by Sharon Lenius

Colleagues,   Some advice from the Fashionista…read it all! Written by Sharon Lenius.

You should consider “layers.”  DC weather is changeable.  So be prepared.  Sometimes an umbrella is handy….sometimes snow boots.  Conference rooms are changeable, too!  So plan to bring a jacket and/or your pashmina

About what to wear and when and what’s happening:

Dec 4 – Monday, Pre-Workshop; Service Meetings, those travelling will want to go for comfort with a slight professional air;.  Special MLTW parking rate at the DoubleTree Garage of $19 per day, a good rate for DC!

Dec 4 – Monday, First Timers Reception. 5-6 pm. Van Buren Room. Look professional.  First impressions count.  You will be meeting the Military Libraries Board Members and the event sponsor representative.

Dec 4 – Welcome Reception.  Themes – you have your choice….Holiday attire of some kind OR Be True to Your School/Team. Holiday socks count.

Dec 5 – Tuesday, Professional look can never go. Remember to sign up for Dine Arounds if you would like to venture out of the hotel.  Some walking may be involved so consider the weather.   Sign up for the Dine Arounds early, they do fill up quickly.  Great opportunity to meet people.

Dec 6 – Wednesday, Busy day!  Again professional is “in.”   We have invited local DC librarians to visit the Info/Expo and partake of a free lunch with us.  Join all as we “Visit the Vendors.”  Sci/Tech folks remember the afternoon Breakout.    Don’t forget the MLTW Holiday Dinner in the Monument View Room of the DoubleTree.  Spruce up a bit; glitter is ok.   Get there early to enjoy the view. And this being DC, there are lots of lights, especially red brake lights!  Very festive.  Start time is 6:30 pm.

Dec 7 – Thursday, We want to impress Roberto Sarmiento, 2018 President of SLA who has come to us from Chicago. It could be a travel day for some, however restrain your grunge.  Also, take some time to view the variety of Posters that are being presented in Crystal Ballroom C during Breakfast and Breaks & Lunch Buffet.

Dec 8 – Friday Post-workshop day with training by DTIC at Ft Belvoir and TechInsight at Ft Myer.  FEDLINK is offering a great “Behind the Scenes Tour” of the fabulous Jefferson Building of Library of Congress. This is an easy METRO ride to Capitol South Stop on the Blue Line to LC.  All these events need special sign up.

DoubleTree/Embassy Suites has great Shuttle Service to/from DCA and the Pentagon City METRO stop (Blue & Yellow Lines) There are a couple shopping malls right there; and  new Whole Foods on 12th St (Go Amazon!) a block and a half from the DoubleTree – if you need snacks or specialized foods.  And did I mention COSTCO?  It’s my go-to-store for binge buying in large qualities; also look for Nordstrom’s and Macy’s at the Fashion Mall Pentagon City,

MLTW 2017 will offer food for substantial breakfasts, breaks and lunches and of course the Holiday Dinner!  Most food events will be in Lincoln Hall – Mon-Wed; Thu – Crystal Ballroom C for food and Posters.

Visit the knowledgeable Exhibitors.  Thank them for their support of the Workshop; we couldn’t have as dynamic and rich Workshop without them.  They have a lot to offer you by way of new products, updates and advice.

A reminder –  Holiday socks count – anytime!
